Dangling cable wires pose a huge issue for many in Chennai city and soon this issue would become a thing of the past!!

Three weeks have gone now since the drive to remove the dangling telecommunication cable wires or unused cable wires at several localities in Chennai started.

The superb piece of information is that GCC in these 3 weeks has removed more than 100km of cable wires. One ward present in each of the 15 GCC zones has been taken up for the work as per a fixed schedule. The unused cable wires removal work is being carried out by the civic body on Saturdays only. The electrical department staff belonging to the Chennai Corporation and staff belonging to the private telecom operators go to the spot and clear up the hanging cables.

A yearly target has also been fixed now by the GCC to make sure that there are no overhead cables from various internet providers in Chennai city.

According to an officer belonging to the electricity department of GCC , the names of various streets that would be covered up would be mentioned in the Whatsapp groups. He added that the unused cable wires get cleared by their staff or by the staff sent by the private telecom operators also. It must be noted that the cables that are in use get tied up properly and not left hanging to avoid causing inconvenience to the public. About 45km of cables have been cleared in the first week.

Not only do several motorists face issues due to these dangling cable wires, but also lamp posts get burdened and these cable wires due to added weight make the lamp posts fall down during rains and heavy winds etc. While giving permission to the cable and internet operators, no overhead cable condition gets included but many times these conditions get violated creating issues for the public.

It was brought out by a resident from Velachery that lorries and heavy commercial vehicles get entangled with these dangling cables. Pedestrians also face issues due to these unused cable wires. He concluded that the residents do not get informed by the internet providers regarding the cable wires.
