In the future, 100 year old heritage school buildings in the state of TN would have a totally different look!!

The government of TN has decided to give a facelift for the 100 year old heritage school buildings in the state. It is now revealed that the school education department would take steps to renovate those government schools where many great scholars, scientists, politicians, sportspersons etc studied.

At an initial cost of Rs 25 crores, all the repair works of govt schools would be undertaken without modifying the heritage structures. This would be done in addition to the restoration works.

According to a senior officer belonging to the school education department it was clear that there was no list available about 100 year old schools. He added that 100 year old schools are present in Chennai and in the neighbouring places. Examples are Lady Willingdon Higher Secondary School on the beach road, Presidency Girls Higher Secondary School in Egmore etc.

To identify those schools that have been present for 100 years and more in TN, an expert committee or team would be formed soon. The team would comprise of PWD officers plus experts from Building Centre and Conservation Division, school education dept authorities etc. The team members would also identify those schools that have produced prominent scientists, experts and politicians etc. After the inspection done by the panel members, a final list would be prepared.

The senior officer then mentioned that for the renovation works the TN govt has allotted Rs 25 crores. As per the requirements, an additional amount would be sanctioned. The library rooms and  labs etc. present in the school campuses would be renovated to protect their antiquity. The experts would constantly keep an eye on the renovated structures of the schools.

It must be noted that to commemorate 100 years of existence the schools would be facilitated by centenary celebrations.
