North Chennai was affected badly due to the heavy rains yesterday. Localities like Purasawakkam, Perambur and Pattalam etc were under water after the heavy rains that lashed Chennai.
On Wednesday, streets like Lettangs Road in Purasawalkam, Perambur Barracks Road, Barracks Gate Road Strahans Road, Stephenson Road, Decastor Road and Siva Rao Street in Pattalam were submerged under water. Inspite of all access roads connecting their street were waterlogged, the street vendors belonging to Choolai sold fishes, vegetables etc.
It was later brought out by a fish vendor from Demellows Street that waterlogging and inundations were frequent in his locality. She added that there was no use simply being in the house without selling fishes as it would not make both ends meet. The kids had a great time playing due to the rains in the Siva Rao Street in Pattalam because the road was unfit for the motorists.
According to an officer from GCC the disposal points were full of water and pumps are being used to remove water. Waterloggings were seen in some parts belonging to Kolathur also. Various streets that were affected in Kolathur were Teachers Colony, Poompuhar Nagar and Anjugam Street etc.
It must be taken into account that work on integrating SWD crossing Paper Mills Road began recently only. This work would be of huge benefits for the people belonging to Poompuhar Nagar etc.
The issue in Korattur was also the same as many residents were unhappy regarding the waterlogging in their places. In Ripon Building in Chennai, the municipal administration minister Mr. K.N. Nehru reviewed steps taken to counter inundation. Point is that ever since the heavy rains began lashing Chennai, the command and control centre at Ripon Buildings was very busy. It is now said that about 2000 calls were received from the public through the helpline 1913.
