Overflow of sewage on the roads in Chennai despite the construction of pumping stations etc?

The construction of 30 relay pumping stations in the Ambattur-Korattur area at an amount of Rs 7 crores hasn`t really served the purpose now!!

It is now revealed that the sewage treatment plant at Kodungaiyur has not been operating at its full capacity despite the construction of 30 relay pumping stations in the above places. From their respective areas, the majority of pumping stations collect sewage and send it to the treatment plant located in Ambattur-Korattur area. Point to be noted is that there is no separate pipeline facility linking them to the Kodungaiyur plant. Large part of sewage flows into canals and drains only for most of the time. Recently, the main pipeline also burst in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar and due to this sewage overflowed like a fountain near Thathankuppam near Padi.

The residents belonging to Krishnamurthy Nagar in Kodungaiyur have been facing many issues due to the sewage overflowing on their streets. The construction of STP hasn`t changed anything on the ground. Even now, the sewage overflows and gets mixed with drinking water. This was highlighted by Mr. M.R. Tamizharasu, secretary, Ever Vigilance Welfare Association.

From the localities such as Ambattur, Madhavaram, Korattur, Mogappair, Thirumangalam, Kolathur and Koyambedu etc, the old pipeline collects sewage and it flows through pdi flyover, Madhavaram and enters STP through Moolakadai.

It is worthy to note that the Ambattur area every day generates nearly 100 MLD of sewage and areas like Kolathur, Anna Nagar and Madhavaram generate another 100 MLD of sewage daily. Old 900mm diameter pipeline laid at Villivakkam is being used by all these areas mentioned above.

As per Mr. S. Sreenivasan, a retired employee from Metro Water dept, pumping stations were set up but no pipeline was laid to coNnect them to STP. He added that Chennai had expanded and the old pipelines were not able to take load.
