Work related to metro rail trail run has begun on the Koyambedu-St Thomas Mount metro rail line. An electrical substation that will supply power to trains and stations has been connected to the grid, while power supply to overhead cables on the stretch will be given by the end of the month.

New assistant managers have been posted at different departments to start preparatory work. The substation at Koyambedu will feed 25KV to metro trains and 33KV to stations for lighting and air conditioning. Overhead lines have been installed wherever the viaduct is completed — from Koyambedu to the Kathipara flyover and on a few portions of the Alandur-St Thomas Mount stretch.
13 students who underwent a PG diploma course in metro technology and management at IIT-Madras have been appointed as assistant managers. They will be in charge of among others lifts and escalators, electrical traction, stations, rolling stock, tracks, air conditioning, electronics and overhead power equipment.
A test track and 11 `turn around` tracks for trains to be maneuvered before they are routed on to the mainline have also been completed at the Koyambedu depot. The four-car train that arrived from Brazil recently will be tested first on the tracks at the depot before being operated on the main line from Koyambedu.
