Flash floods at Chitlapakkam and its nearby areas in Chennai!!

The newly constructed SWDs  or storm water drains and motor pumps have been very effective till now in draining out the water due to the heavy rains in Chennai. The residents belonging to suburban places in southern Chennai are now having fears regarding flash floods in their localities. The fear has been due to the fact that the lakes in their places are not interconnected properly due to missing links.

It was mentioned by a resident from Chitlapakkam in Chennai that the missing links between the lakes have not been established properly and there might be floods in the southern parts of the locality. He added that till now the lakes are not full but when they become full then surplus water would enter the streets causing flooding. He concluded that just 4cm to 5cm of rain in the catchment areas of Selaiyur lake and Chitlapakkam lake would lead to flash floods. The streets here such as Manickavasagar street, Ramanar Street etc have been flooded already on Friday morning.

The cut and cover drain works were taken up by the civic body authorities in 2018 and the residents now want the authorities to speed up the works. To prevent flooding in Ramakrishnapuram,Subhash Chandra Bose Street, Maraimalai Adigal Street, Ramanar Street etc, the missing link between selaiyur surplus canal and cut and cover drain of Chitlapakkam must be completed.

It was later brought out by Mr. P. Viswanathan belonging to Chitlapakkam Resident`s Association Coordination Committee that the Tambaram Corporation was not letting run-off rain water into the Chitlapakkam lake to avoid sewage mixing with the lake. It must be noted that there is an inlet on the west side of the lake and instead of opening the inlet and letting run-off into lake water is diverted around the lake. Point is that this leads to inundation in southern regions of Chitlapakkam.
