In north Chennai, the PHCs or primary health centers have either been removed or shifted to another place. Now, the residents here demand morre PHCs. It is learnt that in the Chennai city there is now increased usage of UPHCs or urban primary health centers and UCHCs or urban community health centers.
It must be noted that in north Chennai the residents are forced to use private clinics or hospitals or commute over 5kms to the government hospital. This has been creating lots of hardships for the residents. Truth is that there is now a lack of specialists at the PHCs during emergencies in north Chennai.
The reason why the residents from north Chennai depend on PHCs is due to the fact that most of them work as daily wagers. It is worthy to note that 154 years back a CHC with 100 beds shifted to Tiruvottriyur Ellaiamman Koil without even stating a valid reason to the residents.
According to a resident belonging to Ernavoor, a health centre that was set up at the locality did not have a doctor. The nurse administrators there only took care of the functioning of the health center. The reason for the absence of a doctor was because of the fact that the doctor contract had ended and a new appointment was not made.
The residents travelled long distances to theUPSC located at tsunami quarters for treatments. It is shocking to mention that around 7 to 8 UPHCs were removed in the last 5 years here. The residents do not prefer private hospitals or clinics due to overcharging there.
In Manali and in Ennore also, there is now a lack of UPHC to help the public in these places. It must be noted that despite the availability of UPHC and UCHC, shortage of doctors and nurses have been causing many issues for the residents.
In places like Thiruvottriur, Perambur and in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, the residents demand additional PHCs and CHCs now. The SMCH or Stanley Medical College Hospital is the nearest government hospital but it is also far from these locaities.
As per a resident from Perambur, durinG emergencies the residents would have to travel long distances to reach the SMCH He revealed that the travel costs were high especially in the nighttime. He concluded that the need now is a UPHC and it would solve the issues of the residents there.
In Chennai now there are 140 PHCs and 16 CHCs to provide treatment for the public. This was mentioned by GCC Commissioner Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi. He added that for every 50000 population, an UPHC has been established in the city.To provide emergency care and specialist care services to the public, there are now 3 medical college hospitals, 2 GH and a communicable diseases hospital in north Chennai.
Point is that t these services would be expanded by establishing 200 wellness and health centers, one each in all 200 divisions in Chennai. Based on demand also, the medical services would be expanded in the city.
