Having planted more than 60000 saplings along the Adyar River and developing dense greenery there, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation is now concentrating on developing more dense greenery around Cooum River. Sounds incredible isn`t it!!
As a part of the contract, a 2 year maintenance clause was included and this was according to the senior officers from GCC . They added that private agencies would take care of all the work like watering, trimming, weeding and replacement of dead saplings. In 2021, the drive originally started by CRRT was taken over by the Chennai Corporation.
It was highlighted by a senior officer from GCC that diverse varieties and native species have been planted. He mentioned that along the Adyar River 2 rows of mangroves and associated species were planted. It is important to improve the green cover in Chennai that is now at 11percent. By this, pollution could be kept in check plus 2 of the major rivers in Chennai would become rejuvenated.
There are a few activists who are not happy now regarding this work of GCC and they want GCC to take note of certain points while undertaking such a work . Point is that before undertaking a plantation drive demarcation must be done first at the Adyar river. The activists were of the view that more involvement from public and other experts would have made this work more transparent. They spoke about the need to have an external audit at all stages of implementation despite the presence of a 2 year maintenance clause.
