It is not easy to live with chronic diseases!!
It is true that chronic diseases like diabetes, arthritis etc could affect the mental health of a person. It has been revealed that one third of those affected with chronic diseases face depresion atleast once in their lifetime. When we have disease, we all would like to get rid of the disease completely but chronic diseases would not be cured completely and they keep occuring. This would lead to depression in the persons with chronic diseases.
Various common chronic diseases that can lead to depression are
Diabetes:
It must be noted that type 2 diabetes is a chronic issue that affects insulin production. Various symptoms associated are frequent urination, hunger, fatigue, thirst etc. There are also chances of getting blurred vision. Point is that the overall complications could worsen the symptoms of depression.
Arthritis:
Arthritis and depression would occur in a person at the same time. It has been brought out by research that depression due to rheumatoid arthritis could make the treatment for arthritis less effective. It is important to treat depression or else it could result in issues like more pain, sexual dysfunction etc.
Heart failure:
There is a direct link between depression and heart failure. It has been found out that around 20 to 30% of patients with heart failure issues would be fighting depression also. Point to be noted is that patients with heart failure would have to deal with multiple feelings from sadness to fear to depression etc.
Kidney diseases:
Many kidney disease patients would also have issues like anxiety disorder, depression and cognitive impairment etc. Those with kidney diseases would have delirium where they show confused behaviour due to the toxins that would affect the brain.
Thyroid:
Thyroid hormones get regulated by the presence of thyroid glands in us. Those who have severe thyroid disease would show mood swings to a huge extent. Persons with hyperthyroidism issues would show unusual nervousness, lack of concentration plus weight gain, decreased libido etc. It is important to note that thyroid disease could lead to infertility in females and this could lead to depression In them.
