To reduce the traffic congestion in Chennai, the corporation would be implementing the Intelligent Transport system or ITS in Chennai soon. It is now said that as many as 165 traffic junctions would be upgraded. This would surely provide huge relief for many in Chennai city.

It is worthy to note that in Chennai metropolitan city there are as many as 500 traffic signals and more than 200 major traffic junctions. The traffic in the morning and in the evening during the peak hours is very high in the city and due to this reason the vehicles have to wait for a long time at the traffic signals. Th4e bitter truth is that ambulances and other emergency vehicles are unable to reach at the correct time to save lives.

To provide a solution to the heavy traffic congestion issue, the Smart City Corporation belonging to the Chennai Corporation would be implementing Intelligent Transport System in Chennai. Information is that this project would be carried out in the city in 2 phases. In this scenario, 165 traffic junctions in the city would be upgraded with respect to traffic information and management systems.

At these important junctions in Chennai, an adaptive traffic  signal control system would be installed. Currently, the traffic signals are being operated by traffic police personnel or particular time concepts. It is superb to mention here that with the adaptive traffic signal control system the traffic signals would be operated automatically.

The traffic signal would open automatically if there are too many vehicles. Point to be noted is that if an ambulance is present at the traffic signal then 4 signals would be opened to make way for smooth movement of the ambulance. In addition, technology to identify those who violate the red lights and those who violate the speed limits etc would also be set up.

The superb piece of information is that  the process of the city bus system would be implemented. Monitoring system would be set up in the buses and by this it would be possible to know where the buses are going. There would be digital information boards in more than 5000 bus stops in Chennai. This digital board would display all important details like the arrival of the next bus etc.

Now, the tender for selecting the company to implement ITS in Chennai is in the final stage. In another 15 days, the tender would be finalised and work orders would be issued.
