Chennai Mayor launched free sanitary napkins scheme

On Tuesday, Chennai Mayor R Priya distributed sanitary napkins to girls in grades 8 to 12 in Greater Chennai Corporation schools at the Ripon Building.

This scheme is being implemented in a total of 281 schools under the Greater Chennai Corporation education department, including 32 higher secondary schools, 38 higher secondary schools, 92 middle schools, and 113 basic schools, at an estimated cost of Rs 4.67 crore for 25,474 girl beneficiaries.

As part of the initiative, 20 sanitary napkins will be distributed every two months to female students on a monthly basis. In addition, 100 sanitary napkins will be maintained in separate cupboards every two months, with 50 sanitary napkins kept on hand monthly for the emergency requirements of female students in schools. A total of 26.59 lakh sanitary napkins are to be distributed to Chennai schools each year.

The launch was attended by Chennai Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi and DC Education D Sneha.
