Tongue or lip tie refers to a condition where there is a short, thick and tight band of tissues that tethers the bottom of the tongue tip to the mouth floor. It is a condition that is present from the birth itself and it would restrict the tongue`s range of motion. The tongue tie would not only constrain the tongue but also the mouth plus neck and other connected muscles etc.
It must be noted that a lip tie refers to a tissue that connects the upper lip to upper gum that would restrict the mouth`s mobility.
Symptoms:
There are symptoms of tongue tie in nursing and bottle fed babies and the most common is painful nipples. It is true that the mothers would develop severe discomfort due to this. When a baby has got oral ties, then it would be inefficient to remove milk from the breast. By this, the babies would have frequent feeds, long feeds etc. There are also chances of mothers having breast issues like blocked ducts, mastitis etc when the breasts do not get drained well.
Role of primary health care provider:
It is said that unless the primary health care providers like doctor, midwife etc knows well about nursing and oral ties etc they might not know how to assess and address the tongue ties. Even a dentist would not know much about tongue ties issues. It is brought out that in Brazil that there is a standard practice to screen for tongue ties in the newborns before they leave the hospitals.
Need or necessity of releasing the tongue ties in babies:
Parents need not try to release tongue ties in their babies if they are not comfortable with the procedure. A skilled pediatric dentist or a paediatrician would be able to do the procedure for tongue tie release in the babies.
What`s the guarantee of tongue tie release in solving all the issues:
It is not recommended to just release the tongue tie without even consulting a lactation expert. Point is that working on latching , feeding management would mean better results after the release of tongue ties. The baby would have tightness on other parts of the body even after the release of tongue ties and in that case it would be important to consult a body work practitioner. It is important to note that ideally it would happen before and after the release of tongue ties in the babies.
