The WRD or Water Resources Department and Chennai Metro Water has been thinking of utilising the water present in the Sikkarayapuram quarry during the summer season. The Cyclone Mandous has led to heavy rains recently and it has improved the water storage at Sikkarayapuram quarry now.

The water bodies in Sikkarayapuram quarries near Mangadu in western parts of Chennai were identified to store rain water. Truth is that the quarries were able to store nearly 400 million cubic feet of water. This was brought out by a senior official from WRD. He added that the residents living in the outskirts  were affected due to floods during the monsoon season due to flood water.

It must be noted that to avoid floods, the TN govt planned to divert floodwater to the quarries through a canal that was constructed between Vandalur- minjur ORR and the quarries at the cost of Rs 4 crores. After the recent rains, few quarries have become full.

It was then pointed out by a senior official belonging to CMWSSB that localities like Anna Nagar, Mogappair, porur, Valasaravakkam and other surrounding areas would be benefited by the water stored in the quarries. Pipelines of 4.5km were laid to draw from the quarries. It was mentioned by the official that the water would reach the treatment plant before being pumped into Chembarambakkam lake. He revealed plans to set up fences around the quarries. The DPR would be submitted to the govt after getting the feasibility report.
