If you happen to go by the Ponniamman Koil Street in Iyyappanthangal in Chennai, then don`t be surprised if you come across syringes, tubes, tablets and other medical waste on the road!!

On the roadside on the Ponniamman Koil Street in Iyyappanthangal in Chennai, more than 10 truck loads of  medical waste of about 200 MT have been dumped. This has been creating lots of problems now. The authorities here have pointed out that the combination of medical as well as solid waste would have come from small clinics and hospitals etc.

It is worthy to note that the bio=medical waste includes syringes, tubes, tablets, medicines etc. The spot where the waste has been dumped has been inspected by some officials from TNPCB and village panchayats of Iyyappanthangal etc. The sanitary workers have been asked to segregate and dispose of the waste.

It was highlighted by Mr. Bhaskaran, assistant engineer of TNPCB Sriperumbudur that no prescription slip or hospital logo was found on the bags that contained biomedical waste etc. The source cannot be identified. It is noteworthy that awareness regarding biomedical waste etc have been created regularly and notices have been issued to the clinics and hospitals to make sure that their vendors do not dump biomedical waste on the roadside.

In the last 5 years, biomedical waste has been dumped at more than 10 spots on Chennai outskirts. This was as per an activist named Mr. V. Pugazhvendan. He was unhappy that TNPCB that disposes of the waste after receiving the complaints does not take any strict action.

Various places in Chennai were biomedical waste get dumped are Mannivakkam lake in Vandalur ORR, Nazarathpet near Poonamallee, near Shastra College in Chembarambakkam, Karapakkam near Adyar river bed plus along various locations along the Adyar River etc.

To stop this menace proper cooperation was needed from the local bodies and this was as per Mr. R. Kannan , member secretary, TNPCB. He explained that the local bodies must play their part in reporting TNPCB and submit reports of clinics and hospitals that dump waste. Lastly, he hinted about the 2 more biomedical waste management facilities that would be coming up in Gummidipoondi.
