The IMD or Indian Meteorological Department has mentioned that today, 12th January NE monsoon might end in the state of Tamil Nadu. The weather would be cool as the wind conditions are changing and rains are becoming less intense now.

Winter might arrive officially by the middle of January month and this was as per some weather bloggers. The reason was that the day as well as night temperatures might decrease as the direction of winds change from easterlies to cold dry northerlies.  The IMD has explained that on 12th January the conditions are favourable for the cessation of NE monsoon rains over TN. It is noteworthy that light to moderate easteriles or north easterlies prevail over the region of low tropospheric levels.

Once when the easterlies speed decreases, then NE monsoon is considered withdrawn in the state and this was according to some meteorologists. Other factors like reduction in the moisture in the atmosphere and less clouding and reduced rains etc would also reveal the NE monsoon withdrawal.

It was mentioned by Mr. Mahesh Palawat of SkyMet Weather that the wind directions have changed from easterlis to cold and dry northerlies and north-westerlies. These have been making their presence felt in a huge way in Chennai and in TN now. As a result, the temperatures might go down and winter might arrive officially. From 16th and 17th Jan onwards, the temperatures might decrease in the Chennai city and across TN. In Chennai, the average temperatures are a maximum of 29 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 21.2 degrees Celsius.

By the middle of January, the night temperatures in Nungambakkam station might drop to below 18 degrees. This was pointed out by the famous Chennai weather blogger Mr. Pradeep John. He added that the night temperatures are expected to come down from the Pongal festival onward and winter might set in from Pongal. It is learnt that in the last 2 years the night temperature at Nungambakkam has not dropped below 18 degrees  in January. It must be noted that in 2023 the night temperature might go down below 18 degrees also.
