Sensational impact caused in Chennai by the implementation of a new headway by CMRL!!

In November 2022, CMRL implemented a new headway or frequency between 2 trains and there has been an increase in the ridership in corridor 1 and in corridor 2.

To address the passenger overload in corridor 1 in the peak hours, the new headway was started on a trial basis. On 21st of November in 2022, CMRL made many heads turn when it began a new headway of operating 3 metro trains in just 12 minutes with short loop service.

On both C1 (blue line) and in C2 (green line), the ridership increased from 2.06lakhs passengers per day to 2.16lakhs passengers per day. The revision in the headway has made the trains less crowded now and this has been in the peak hours also. It was explained by an official from CMRL that when the bheaday was just 5 minutes the C1 was always crowded and running too full of  capacity. He added that C2 was relatively less crowded and to reduce the crowd in C1 the train frequencies were changed to 3,3 and 6. It means that in 12 minutes there are 3 trains now compared to 3 trains in 15 minutes.

The metro train passengers are now able to stand comfortably inside the trains and this became possible due to the implementation of a new headway. Point is that when compared to a frequency of 5min earlier in C2, the frequency was changed to 6 min due to less crowd.

There might be some changes in this too depending on the need. It is superb to note that around 20 new train operators have completed their training and they would be utilized based on the needs. This was according to a CMRL official. It is now brought out that CMRL is deliberating on a new headway of 4minutes in C1 till Wimco Nagar metro station.

From November 2022 onwards, the average ridership per day along C1 increased from 1.12lakhs passengers to 1.15 lakhs passengers. This was brought to light by data from CMRL. The average daily ridership rose from 94090 passengers to 98626 passengers in C2. The implementation of short loop service has been tremendous.
