The Food and Civil Supplies department has been running Amudham Stores in many places in Chennai. The news that has come out is that the dept has decided to renovate the Amudham Stores in places like Gopalapuram and Anna Nagar. This would be due to the tough competition it has been facing from the private departmental stores. Office management would also be improved.

Mr. J. Radhakrishnan, principal secretary, cooperation, Food and Consumer Protection, expressed his views. He explained that the renovation would be carried out as a pilot project and the remaining shops would also be renovated in a phased manner.

By selling the essential commodities at low prices, the self service departmental stores managed by  TNCSC or TN Civil Supplies Corporation have been playing a superb part  in market intervention. The bitter truth is that despite the wholesale stores run by several  cooperative societies doing well, the Amudham Stores could not match up their levels.

Fast moving consumer goods would be introduced in the Amudham Stores in Chennai and office management of these stores would improve. By this, the Amudham Stores would become consumer friendly. This was mentioned by Mr. J. Radhakrishnan.

The shops open at 9am in the morning and shut down at 12:30pm in the noon and then open at 3:30pm and close at 11pm in the night. It must be noted that more workers would be employed to work in the shifts and outsourcing would be carried out. An amount of Rs 35 lakhs would be spent for refurbishing.
