Within the next 6 months, the tuna fishing harbour that is being constructed at Thiruvottiyur Kuppam would be opened. The project began in June in 2019 but was stopped due to the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020. This was highlighted by a senior officer from the dept of Fisheries.
It must be recalled that when the work restarted the private organisations moved the southern bench of NGT or National Green Tribunal. A study to be taken against the negative impact of harbour on the marine ecosystem was ordered by NGT.
Information is that the dept of Fisheries has almost completed the work on the landslide facilities like administrative building, restrooms, wharf, auction halls etc. On the southern and on the northern side of the sea, 2 break waters have been constructed by the department. As per an official, the one on the southern side was the main breakwater and it was a lengthy one
To study the impact of dredging on the sea, the Fisheries dept took the guidance of marine biology dept belonging to Annamalai University in Tamil Nadu. When the study gets over, the department would take up dredging works and would set up break waters in the new harbour.
