Travelling in MTC buses and metro trains in Chennai with a single ticket would be possible as CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority has fixed a deadline to roll out common tickets from December 2023. By the middle of 2024, the integration with railways would be achieved.
On Friday, 17th February 2023, CUMTA officials took part in a meeting with the officials from C-DAC Nagpur and Trivandrum and from IITM. It was later brought to light by some sources belonging to CUMTA that CDAC Trivandrum has got experience making a journey application and their centre at Noida has experience in ticketing.
It is now said that within a few weeks the officials would put together a proposal along with the cost and process involved in cloud hosting, app development etc once the app gets launched. Later on, it would be sent to the government for approval. The source from CUMTA added that for integration of the database of SR for common ticketing CUMTA has written to SR also and the letter was forwarded to RB for approval.
For the benefit of metro trains, road transport and train passengers, CUMTA has proposed a QR Code based ticketing system. In the QR code there would be a layer for the metro trains, a layer for MTC buses and a layer for the trains. It is said that the mobile app through which the ticket would be booked would serve as a journey planner .
In the beginning, the person must enter the source and the destination and immediately the app would display options like metro trains, bus or trains or any one or two of them based on the journey distance. The payment ecosystem for bus and metro trains must be integrated and this was mentioned by Mr. Santhosh Loganathan an expert in public transport.
