For preparing the vision document for the third master plan for Chennai, the CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority is very busy now. There are some talks that were held at the headquarters of the planning authority regarding integrating cycling also in the master plan.
The meeting saw the presence of representatives from ITDP or Institute for Transport and Development Policy, Dutch Cycling Embassy and others plus CMDA member secretary Mr. Anshul Mishra. It is noteworthy that the experts discussed the feasibility of providing cycle tracks on the Chennai roads in addition to integrating cycling in the third master plan.
In the meetings, there were discussions about sustainable urban mobility, cycling policy, transit oriented development plan, multi modal integration etc. Bicycle lanes linking with the metro stations plus expanding and improving the cycle sharing system and bicycle parking etc were also discussed.
Comprehensive mobility plan or CMP is under preparation now and CUMTA has been planning to integrate cycling in this CMP. It has been several years since the cycle sharing system was introduced by GCC in Chennai and even now it remains a non-starter only. The residents of Chennai would be able to share their suggestions etc for vision documents by visiting www.cmavision.in.
