In the afternoons and in the evenings, it has become common to witness heavy traffic congestion on the EVR Periyar Salai outside the famous DG. Vaishnava College in Arumbakkam. This has been creating issues for both students and the motorists.
There are nearly 10000 students studying in DG. Vaishnava College whose main entrance and back entrance are on the Kola Perumal School street both leading to EVR Periyar Road. There is chaos on the road when the students disperse and cross the road here to go to the bus stop. The road would be so overcrowded when the students leave for their homes at 1:30pm and at 6:30pm every day. This was according to a shopkeeper in the area.
It was brought to light by a student belonging to DG. Vaishnava College that a FOB or foot over bridge was highly necessary so that both motorists and students would be safe. He threw light about how it was so difficult to navigate the crowd of students and vehicles and how chances of getting run over was high.
Mr. Mahesh Kumar, deputy mayor of Chennai, mentioned that there was a need for foot over bridge and that he would write a letter to the Highways dept for setting up of FOB.
