On Friday, a review meeting was conducted by GCC or greater chennai corporation regarding the work on SWD or storm water drains in Chennai. It was brought to light that the delayed funding from Asian Development Bank has slowed down the construction at Kosasthalaiyar river basin.

Out of 763km of drains, just 403km has been completed in the project. This was as per the chief engineer Mr. Rajendiran. He added that now GCC would shift its focus on the interior roads on the priority basis. It is learnt that a list was sought by the regional deputy commissioner or RDC for the roads that were flooded during the North East monsoons in 2022. Truth is that they were asked to take up such roads on a priority basis. The Kosasthalaiyar project would also be speeded up after receiving the ADB funds.

Under the singara Chennai 2.0 initiative, a huge amount of Rs 600 crores would be received and  work in the arterial and interior roads is being carried out. The deputy commissioner of GCC Mr. Mahesh Kumar mentioned that the work would begin soon.

For the construction of 560km of SWD at Rs 447 cr in 9 packages under the Kovalam basin, the GCC would be floating tenders soon. It must be noted that the disposal would be via Pallikaranai marsh land and hence there would not be a need to to get approval from Coastal Regulation Zone or CRZ. He concluded that CRZ clearance for other packages would be sought again.
