At a mammoth cost of Rs 24435 crores, the ECR or East Coast Road from Mamallapuram to Kanniyakumari would be expanded into 4 lanes. This was mentioned by Mr. Nitin Gadkari, union minister.
It is known that the ECR Road runs from Thiruvanmiyur till Kanniyakumari in the southern part of TN. The TN Highway department is in-charge of the section from Thiruvanmiyur to Mamallapuram. Under the National Highways Scheme is the 687 km stretch of ECR from Mamallapuram to Kanniyakumari.
Questions were raised by Mr. Vaiko, MDMK general secretary and by Mr. M. Shanmugam, MP regarding the expansion of ECR. As a reply, Mr Nitin Gadkari, union minister for road transport mentioned that the ECR would be expanded from Mamallapuram to Kanniyalumari into 4 lanes at a cost of Rs 24435 crores. He hinted that as per the DPR link roads, underpases and bridges etc would be built accordig to the needs of pedestrians and vehicles etc.
It was later brought out by NHAI sources that it has been carrying out ECR works by dividing them into 8 sections. By November 2023, the 38km stretch between Puducherry and Poondiyaankuppam in Cuddaloire district would be complted. In February 42% of the work had been completed already.
