The news that has emerged is that the work on the new second pipeline from Chembarambakkam reservoir in the Kancheepuram district to the drinking water pumping station of Metro water at Koyambedu is in its final stages. It is now brought to light that after the completion of work the residents in south Chennai would be able to get water pumped from the reservoir in Chembarambakkam.

The water treatment plant at Chembarambakkam could treat and supply 560 MLD of water per day. This was according to a senior officer from the CMWD. Currently, with  a single pipeline, only 265 MLD is being treated and distributed. It is noteworthy that to increase the supply quantity from Chembarambakkam it was proposed that a second pipe be laid. In 2022, the work on the new second pipeline began at a cost of Rs 44.33 crores. Till now, 75% works have been completed.

It must be taken into account that a portion of the  pipeline is cutting across the Chennai- Bengaluru national highway. A state of art technology would be used to lay a 3000mm diameter pipeline at a depth of 20m. By this, road cutting could be avoided. After this, there would be an embedding of another pipeline with a diameter of 2000mm.
