The Greater Chennai Corporation has planned to undertake a development project within a 30 km radius of the Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS), which operates between Chennai Beach and Velachery.

Within this corridor, 150 services are operated daily between Chennai Beach Station and Velachery, and a project linking Velachery with Parangimalai (St. Thomas Mount) is in progress. As part of this, a project is being undertaken to link the MRTS with the Chennai Metro Rail Services.

Railway officials have informed that the Chennai Metro Rail will only be linked with the MRTS once the 4th Corridor of Chennai Metro Rail, linking Chennai Beach and Egmore Railway Station, is completed.

In addition, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has decided to renovate and modernize the MRTS railway stations, similar to recent Chennai Metro Rail Stations. The railway stations in the MRTS corridor, including Mandavelli, Greenways Road, Kotturpuram, Kasturba Nagar, Indira Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Taramani, Perungudi, and Velachery, will be renovated, covering around 2,044,400 square meters.

CMDA plans to set up commercial complexes, restaurants, vehicle parking facilities, and other amenities in these spaces. CMDA has written to the Tamil Nadu State Government and Southern Railway Administration to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this project.

Given the situation, the Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to renovate the surrounding areas of the MRTS stations. "There are 19 stations in the MRTS corridor, and some of these stations lack basic amenities. In a few stations such as Perungudi, they are in the worst conditions without even any basic amenities," officials shared. Therefore, it has been decided to undertake the renovation of more than 10 MRTS stations within a distance of 30 km.

As part of this project, basic amenities such as roads and street lights will be set up within the 30 km radius around these stations. These projects will be undertaken under the Chennai City Partnership Plan.
