If you go to ECR in chennai, then you would be able to see many things from eateries to many hangouts etc. For a long time, the people living here did not have pavements. The news now is that CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has announced pavements and cycling tracks along the 5km stretch between Neelakkarai and Akkarai.
It must be noted that the residents wanted the agency to take steps to prevent vendors from encroaching the pavements and to make sure that the vehicles were not packed on the cycle lane.
An estimated amount of Rs 20 cr would be spent for this and this was as per the CMDA minister Mr. Sekar Babu. The pavements here would be of huge benefit for many elderly citizens who live in ECR. They would be able to move easily from one place to another by these pavements or else they would be forced to walk on the main carriageway among the fast moving vehicles. This was mentioned by Gomathi Nayagam, secretary of the Federation of Residents Welfare Associations of Neelankarai.
The project must be fast tracked and this was according to Mr. Sivakumar, former president of Kapaleeswarar Nagar Welfare Association belonging to Neelankarai. Soon, there would also be expansion of EVR and this would help many motorists heading to and from Puducherry.
Now, the stretch is closed on the weekends for the cyclists and this would not be possible for a long time. This was according to Mr. Divagaran, co-founder of We are Chennai Cycling Group or WCCG.
