The 2 wheelers that are being used as bike taxis are now being seized by the RTOs or Regional Transport Offices in south Chennai. This activity has once again started now after a gap of 4 long years.
There were many complaints from the auto drivers that 2 wheelers that have permits only for personal use were used as bike taxis that are for commercial use. It must be taken into account that a case regarding this is pending before the HC of Madras.
By operating two wheelers as bike taxis, the aggregators like Ola, uber and Rapido etc have been violating the TN Motor Vehicle Rules . The shocking information is that during road accidents while travelling in these bike taxis the victims won`t be able to get the compensation money etc. This was pointed out by Mr. S. Balasubramanian, state president of CITU autorickshaw wing.
It must be recalled that CMRL would operate 50 bike taxis by associating with some aggregator for the last mile connectivity at the metro stations in the city. These bike taxis would be operated by women for women passengers.
Now, the state transport dept has been urged by CITU and by 6 other divers unions to take steps to prevent CMRL from going ahead with its plan of operating 50 bike taxis. On 28th March 2023, Mr Nirmal Raj (Transport Commissioner) had written to all RTOs about the illegal operation of non-transport or personnel use vehicles as bike taxis in Chennai.
He instructed the RTOs to conduct special drives to curtail loss of revenues for the TN govt and owners of the commercial transport vehicles etc. As per the instructions, an action plan on the report would be submitted by all the zonal level officers. On the other hand, in north Chennai no bike taxis were operated and this was as per some authorities.
