Ask any woman if she finds it comfortable and safe to walk in the underground subways in Chennai, the answer would be NO!!
The subways in Chennai have become unsafe especially for the women these days. Just recently, an incident took place at the subway in Tambaram where a woman was harassed by a sub inspector. The incident went viral and it caught the attention of many. There are many such incidents that happen in the subways in places like Tambaram, Thirusulam, Perungalathur etc. It was brought out that the local vendors play their role in protecting the people from harassment.
Not only women but men too face sexual harassment in the subways. Some time back in a subway at Tambaram a young man was sexually harassed by a middle aged man of around 40 years. The bitter truth is that many subways in Chennai (without proper lighting and security cameras etc) have become a place for the antisocial elements.
It is known that subways have been constructed by the government and crores of money have been spent so that the public could use them. Point is that the public cannot use the subways without any fear now. Many illegal activities take place at the subways only now.
