The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has been cracking down on illegal sewage connections and roadside encroachments in the city. From April 4 to April 20, the GCC has disconnected 2,288 illegal sewage connections and collected a penalty of Rs 5.70 lakh from the residents. The civic body has warned residents and commercial establishments to refrain from having illegal sewage connections, which can clog up the storm water drains designed only for rainwater flow. The highest penalty was collected in Ambattur (Zone 7), followed by Teynampet (Zone 9) and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar (Zone 6).

Additionally, the GCC has removed 1,581 encroachments, including 446 permanent and 1,135 temporary shops on the roadside in the last 3 weeks. A zonal flying squad headed by the zonal officer was formed to remove encroachments and construction debris dumped in public places. The encroachments were cleared three days a week – Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The crackdown aims to promote public safety and preserve the city`s cleanliness.
