Coimbatore Gold Jewellery shops were abuzz with activity as Akshaya Trithiiya Day was celebrated on 22nd and 23rd April. In a bid to attract customers, jewelers offered various special discounts, resulting in overall good business. However, despite the festivities, the jewelers reported a 20 per cent drop in sales compared to the previous year.

Muthu Venkataraman, the President of Coimbatore Gold Jewellers` Association, attributed the drop in sales to the increase in gold prices. He stated, "People showed more interest in buying gold jewellery in fewer grams due to the increase in prices. After many years, Akshaya Trithi was observed for two days this year, and a total of 80 kg of gold was sold in Coimbatore. Last year, 100 kg of gold was sold."
