Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has been doing flood mitigation work in southern Chennai with funds provided by the Germany based KfW bank. These works are now in various stages of completion. The news that has come out now is that GCC would be completing these storm water drain or SWD works in south Chennai before monsoons.
It is learnt that 15 disposal points in flood prone places like Mylai Nagar in Madipakkam with dispodsal at Veerangal Odai, Ram Nagar North near Inner Ring Road, Ram Nagar South have been completed.
It was brought to light by an official from GCC that of the 160km drains in phase 1 and phase 2 of the project work on drains running to a length of 20.2 kms have been completed. In 641 out of 1296 places in the Perungudi zone in Chennai, GCC has completed work on silt catch pits.
The GCC officials have mentioned 15 streets in Nanganallur like Voltas Colony, Balaji Nagar First Street, Jain Staff Colony, B.V. Nagar, Third Main Road, Lakshmi Nagar and Nehru Colony etc leading to Veerangal Odai were completed.
It was mentioned by an officer from the Chennai corporation that the SWDS works would be completed before the NE monsoons. In the Alandur, Perungudi and in the Sholinganallur zones in south Chennai, GCC have taken up SWD work along 127 roads for a length of 39.8km. It must be taken into account that the work has been started in 3 packages and would be carried out at a cost of Rs 175 crores.
In areas like Nanganallur, Madipakkam, Srinivasa Nagar, Ramanujam Nagar North, Sadasivam Nagar etc, 36% of SWD works have been finished till now.This was according to an official. He hinted that tenders have been settled for SWD construction in Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur and work is going on.
