The Ministry of Railways has approved funds for conducting a survey for the construction of a fourth railway line on the congested Tambaram-Chengalpattu route in Chennai. The survey will also cover four other locations, with a total allocation of Rs 11.52 crore. The fourth line is a long-pending project aimed at reducing congestion and improving connectivity in the Tambaram-Chengalpattu section, a vital gateway to the city.
The railway board notification stated that the final local surveys for major rail line projects in Southern Railway, including the Tambaram-Chengalpattu fourth line, Jolarpettai-Coimbatore third and fourth lines, Coimbatore-Shoranur third and fourth lines, and Arakkonam-Renigunta third and fourth lines, have been approved.
The Tambaram-Chengalpattu route witnesses a significant number of daily services, with an average footfall of over two lakh passengers. Commuters have expressed relief at the proposal, as the fourth track will help alleviate congestion and improve train services. The survey is a crucial step towards enhancing connectivity and providing seamless travel experience to passengers.
