In line with the Singara Chennai 2.0 project, the Corporation has announced the temporary closure of two cemeteries, namely Shastri Nagar and Balakrishnapuram, for essential maintenance and upgrades. The closures are scheduled to take effect from Wednesday, May 10.
A statement issued on behalf of the Corporation explained that as part of the Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative, the gas crematorium at Balakrishnapuram Cemetery, located in Alandur area, will be converted into a liquid petroleum crematorium. Consequently, the Balakrishnapuram Cemetery will remain closed from May 10 to July 10 to facilitate the necessary conversion work. During this period, mourners and families are advised to utilize the nearby Kannan Colony Cemetery for their needs.
Simultaneously, maintenance work will be conducted on the liquid petroleum crematorium and chimney at Shastri Nagar Cemetery in Ward 27, Madhavaram Area. As a result, the Shastri Nagar Cemetery will be temporarily closed from May 10 to May 25. However, mourners can make use of the available facilities at the MGR Cemetery in Manali Mandal, as well as the Naga Mayanam and Telugu Colony Mayanam in Madhavaram Mandal during this period.
The Corporation understands the significance of these cemeteries to the community and assures that the temporary closures are necessary to improve the cremation facilities and provide enhanced services to the residents of Chennai. The maintenance and upgrade works aim to create a more efficient and environmentally friendly infrastructure, aligning with the objectives of the Singara Chennai 2.0 project.
