The prices of vegetables in Koyambedu market have sharply increased. Approximately 450 to 470 trucks of vegetables are brought to Chennai`s Koyambedu market for daily sales. However, due to climatic changes in the vegetable-producing states, the yield has decreased. As a result, only 350 to 400 trucks of vegetables have been arriving at the Koyambedu market in recent days, leading to a significant price surge.
As of Monday, the prices of various vegetables have risen as follows: tomatoes, which were previously sold at Rs. 25 per kilogram, are now being sold at Rs. 45; small onions, previously priced at Rs. 70, are now Rs. 80; Ooty carrots, previously priced at Rs. 50, now cost Rs. 75; brinjals, previously priced at Rs. 25, are now sold at Rs. 50, and those previously sold at Rs. 45 are now Rs. 60. Similarly, drumsticks, previously sold for Rs. 80, are now priced at Rs. 130; ginger, previously sold for Rs. 190, now costs Rs. 240, and fenugreek, previously sold for Rs. 60, is now priced at Rs. 90.
The increased vegetable prices have caused significant hardship for the middle and lower-class people who depend on retail trade. Koyambedu vegetable traders have stated that this price fluctuation will continue for a few more days, and if the supply increases, prices may decrease.
