In a groundbreaking move, the Chennai Police have introduced two patrol vehicles equipped with the state-of-the-art Vehicle Interceptor System (VIS). Within a mere two weeks of implementation, this advanced system has successfully detected a staggering 3,948 cases of traffic violations. The most prevalent offense identified by the VIS is overspeeding, accounting for 2,394 cases. Additionally, it has detected 1,003 instances of individuals not wearing seat belts, 550 cases of individuals not wearing helmets (including 194 pillion riders), and one instance of cell phone usage while driving.
The VIS vehicles are outfitted with cutting-edge technology, including a 360-degree Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera and a 2D radar system, enabling them to capture a wide range of traffic violations. This marks the first utilization of such a system in South India for monitoring traffic offenses. The acquisition of the vehicle interceptor system has come at a total cost of Rs 22.4 lakh.
The interceptors, while in motion, can accurately detect various traffic violations, such as riding without headgear, carrying multiple passengers, using cell phones while driving, and overspeeding. The system is capable of capturing violations in both static and dynamic modes, ensuring that offenses committed by parked as well as moving vehicles are detected. Once the violations are captured by the camera, the control room validates them, and a challan (ticket) is generated.
Presently, two vehicles equipped with the VIS are operational along Kamarajar Salai and the ECR stretch. Another vehicle is anticipated to be added soon, serving the North Chennai area. This expanded deployment will further enhance the monitoring and enforcement of traffic rules in the city.
