To control the increase in the addiction and drug abuse among adults and adolescents etc, the TN govt has asked GCC, TNUHDB and other agencies with support from Kilpauk based IMH to hold health and wellness camps in settlements in Chennai.
For organising the camps in Chennai, the National Health Mission or NHM in TN have asked GCC to provide support and coordination. In urban communities in the areas like Kannagi Nagar in Chennai, prevalence of addiction, substance use and drug abuse etc have been noticed and discussions were held regarding this in the meeting that took place in May.
At Kannagi Nagar in the Sholinganallur zone, first cap would be held. It is learnt that this area comprises people belonging to economically weaker sections displaced from settlements across the MRTS line.
It is common to see men, women and even the kids getting addicted to alcohol and substance abuse etc in an socio-economically weaker section of an Indian setting. This was mentioned by an officer.
To address this important problem, a meeting was convened (on the instruction from the TN health minister) at NHM with mental health experts. In the meeting only, the decision was taken about the initiation of a health & wellness camp for the adults and adolescents in Kannagi Nagar.
