Last year in the May month, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation began desliting SWD in the summer itself. It must be taken into note that there were gunny bags containing silts that were stacked up on the streets.

Now in 2023, GCC is yet to begin this work and till now no tenders have been floated. The residents now fear that the localities might get flooded badly if it rains more than 10cms. The silt catch pits have been clogged with road side waste and sewage etc.

The residents belonging to places like Mogappair, Washermenpet,Korukkupet, Pulianthope, Purasawalkam etc spoke about how the silt catch pits have been clogged now.Information gathered is that the silt catch pits have square lid openings that would keep out the waste and let water into the SWDs.

As per Mr. J. Radhakrishnan, GCC Commissioner, it was clear that the tenders are being finalised to desilt drains. He added that the desilting works would be carried out at a cost of Rs 27 crores and the works would begin soon.To plug the sewage outfalls into the SWD, GCC is in touch with the metro water. Sudden plugging of sewage would lead to some issues for the residents. Hence, GCC is coordinating with metro water officials for a solution.
