Chennai`s cooperative minister K R Periyakaruppan chaired a consultation at the state secretariat, announcing the decision to sell tomatoes at Rs 60 per kg in the Public Distribution System (PDS) shops. The move aims to control the soaring tomato prices in the city. From Tuesday onwards, 32 fair price shops in North Chennai and 25 shops in Central and South Chennai will begin selling tomatoes. This initiative will extend to 82 PDS shops in the state capital.

Periyakaruppan assured that steps will be taken to expand the tomato sales to the rest of the state, based on demand, with the goal of stabilizing the commodity`s price. To ensure a steady supply, officials from the state cooperative and horticulture departments are directly sourcing tomatoes from neighboring states for PDS and Farm Fresh outlets in Tamil Nadu.

Currently, tomatoes are already being sold at Rs 60 per kg at 62 Farm Fresh outlets across the state, including 27 in Chennai."
