Following the recent spurt in vegetable prices, the prices of grocery items are also increasing leading to a substantial increase in the monthly expenses for the citizens!

Along with the startling price increase of vegetables throughout the country, the prices of grocery items have also shot up!

Non-seasonal rains are indicated to be the reason for the shortage of essential grocery items. However, hoarding of food items is also suggested as one of the reasons for the price increase.

To increase the safe storage of grocery items, the central and state governments have been providing subsidies from 50% to 70%.

With the godowns constructed as above, the grocery items are allegedly hoarded in these godowns in large quantities and this has led to the price increase of the grocery items.

This has led to a considerable increase in the monthly budget for the families!

In this regard, the President of the Chennai Koyambedu Food Grains Traders` Association, Manivannan, shared:

"Stock of essential grocery items required for the 6 months is stored by the wholesale traders and as such, there occur shortages now and then.

If this hoarding is prevented, it is certainly possible to bring down the prices in 15 days.

The Department of Cooperatives has the authority to take legal action against those who hoard groceries. With such action, the hoarding can be controlled.  The Cooperative Department must continue its action to reduce the price of other items apart from tomatoes as well!"\
