As part of its CSR initiative, Redington Foundation has installed 67 biogas plants at Kuruthanamedu village and renovated one pond at Thandalacherri village near warehouse operations of ProConnect Supply Chain Solutions (a wholly owned subsidiary of Redington) in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. The project aims to promote the use of biofuel as an alternative to fossil fuel, enhance the availability of water for irrigation and drinking purposes, and replenish the groundwater level in the area. The project has been implemented by Hand in Hand Inclusive Development and Services- HHIDS, a non-governmental organization working for rural development. At a local event attended by over 500 villagers, Redington Foundation handed over the biogas plants and the pond to the respective village panchayats. Mrs. R.Ishwarya Ramanathan, IAS - RTO, Mr. Vijayaraghavan, CFO - ProConnect , Mr. Rakesh, Head HR- ProConnect , Dr.Purnima Rao, Trustee – Redington Foundation, employees from Redington & ProConnect and HHIDS Management team participated and undertook tree plantation in this event.
The biogas plants will help the villagers to convert organic waste into biogas, which can be used for cooking and lighting. This will reduce their dependence on firewood and kerosene, and also prevent air pollution and deforestation. The biogas plants will also produce organic manure, which can be used for improving soil fertility and crop yield.
The pond renovation will benefit around 1000 households in Thandalacherri village panchayat by providing them access to water throughout the year for domestic consumption, livestock, and agriculture. The pond has been cleared of Juliflora, a weed that depletes water resources, and has been planted with native trees to create a social forest. The pond has also been fenced and provided with a channel to prevent water loss and contamination.
Redington Foundation also provides additional support to the villages under its multi-sector development initiative. This includes the provision of four battery-operated vehicles (BoV) to collect and segregate waste at the panchayat level. The BoVs will help to improve the sanitation and hygiene conditions in the villages and also enable waste conversion into useful products. Further, two sanitary napkin incinerators will be installed in middle schools of Panpakkam and Thandalacherri for the safe disposal of sanitary napkins. The incinerators will improve the personal hygiene habits of adolescent girls and also encourage them to pursue higher education by reducing dropout rates.
Additionally, Redington Foundation has also provided one computer and accessories to Panpakkam library to support the digital literacy and employability skills of rural students and youth. It is also providing materials to three Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) centres in Panpakkam, Kuruthanamedu and Thandalacherri villages to improve the facilities for mother and child health, nutrition, preschool education and immunization.
The project will benefit around 6240 people from six villages in the Gummidipoondi block of Thiruvallur district. The project’s objective is to build awareness and volunteerism among the community on various aspects of sustainable development such as environment, health, education, and livelihood.
“At Redington Foundation, we are committed to drive positive impact at the grass-root level and improve the quality of life for people. Our project in the villages of Thandalacherri and Kuruthanamedu is a conscious step towards achieving this goal and we are hopeful that our efforts will enable the people with better accessibility to renewable energy, clean water, digital literacy and personal hygiene.” said Ramesh Natarajan, CEO, of Redington Limited.
