As the soaring prices of essential vegetables continue to burden Chennai households, residents are facing limited choices in their kitchens. The skyrocketing cost of tomatoes, small onions, ginger, and green chillies has led to widespread concerns among the city`s population. In response to the crisis, the government has announced measures to address the situation and provide relief to the people.
The price of small onions, a dearly essential vegetable, has surged to an unprecedented Rs 230 per kilogram in Chennai. The dwindling supply, which has plummeted from 50-60 tonnes per day to a mere 20 tonnes, has resulted in the sharp increase in prices. Ginger is now being sold at an exorbitant rate of Rs 300 per kilo, while green chillies command a hefty price tag of Rs 200 per kilo.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr M.K. Stalin, convened a meeting with officials to address the mounting vegetable prices. He expressed concern over the steady rise in tomato prices, with the vegetable being sold at Rs 100 per kilo in the Koyambedu market. Retail prices for tomatoes have even surpassed this, reaching as high as Rs 150 in Chennai. Similarly, the cost of beans has also surged, with a kilo now priced at Rs 90 in Koyambedu and Rs 120 in retail markets.
