The State Government of Tamil Nadu has been reviewing the reintroduction of the double-decker bus services in the Chennai Metro City!

Double-decker buses were being operated in Metro Cities including Chennai and Mumbai around 20 years ago!

Apart from the important advantage that the double-decker buses can accommodate more passengers, it is also possible for these passengers to enjoy the sight of high-rise buildings on the route!

Especially, the double-decker buses were operated in the Chennai Metro City on the route from Broadway to Tambaram in Chennai Metro City. However, this double-decker bus service was stopped in 2008 due to the acute traffic congestion and the construction of a large number of overbridges in Chennai Metro City.

Subsequently, trailer buses were introduced and operated. However, as it was difficult to drive them in narrow lanes/roads, this trailer bus service was also stopped!  Meanwhile, there is a plan to reintroduce the double-decker bus services in a few selected routes in Chennai Metro City.

In this regard, The State Transport Minister of the State Government of Tamil Nadu, Sivasankar, has been discussing and reviewing this issue with the higher officials of the State Bus Transport Corporations.

The State Transpire minister shared, "We have planned the reintroduction of the double-decker bus services in certain routes with scope. An analytical review is being conducted on whether this double-decker bus service could be introduced linking the various tourist spots in Chennai Metro City!"
