Counselling for admission to graduate engineering courses to commence on 22nd July!

The counseling for admission to graduate engineering courses, including B.E., B.Tech., etc., is scheduled to commence on 22nd July and conclude on 11th September.

The Tamil Nadu State Government Minister for Higher Education, Ponmudi, released the timetable for the counseling sessions in Chennai Metro City.

The application for admission to the graduate engineering courses offered by the engineering colleges functioning under Anna University was in process from the 5th of May until the 4th of June. 187,847 candidates applied with all certificates, documents, and the application fees. Out of this, 178,958 candidates were declared eligible for counseling, and the merit or rank list for these eligible candidates was released on the 26th of June.

Reasons for postponement:

It was expected that the counseling would be conducted for special category candidates on the 2nd of July and from the 7th of July for candidates in the common or general cadre.

However, as there was no announcement regarding the schedule for counseling for admission to graduate medical courses of MBBS & BDS, it was announced that the dates for counseling for admission to graduate engineering courses were postponed.

In this situation, the Tamil Nadu State Government Health Minister, Ma. Subramanian, announced that the merit or rank list for the candidates for counseling for admission to graduate medical courses. Information has been gathered that the Central Government has emphasized that the counseling for admission to graduate medical courses MUST be completed before the end of July.

With the expeditious counseling for admission to graduate medical courses, Tamil Nadu Government Higher Education Minister Ponmudi released the merit or rank list of candidates for counseling for admission to graduate engineering courses at the Technical Education Complex in Guindy, Chennai Metro City.

Subsequently, the Minister for Higher Education informed the press reporters that 178,959 candidates have qualified for counseling. In the first phase, the counseling will be conducted for special cadre candidates with a 7.5% quota scheduled on the 22nd and 23rd of July. Subsequently, the counseling is scheduled for special cadre candidates from the 24th of July until the 26th of July.

The counseling for general or common cadre candidates is scheduled from the 28th of July until the 1st of September.

3 phases of counseling for the current academic year:

During the last academic year, counseling was conducted in 4 phases. However, as the All India T Technology Council has ordered that admission to engineering colleges MUST be completed before the 15th of September, counseling for admission to graduate engineering courses will be conducted only in 3 phases this academic year!

Accordingly, the 1st Phase of counseling is scheduled to be conducted from the 28th of July until the 9th of August. The 2nd Phase of counseling is scheduled to run from the 9th of August until the 22nd of August. The 3rd Phase of counseling is scheduled to be completed from the 22nd of August until the 3rd of September. After each round, the selected candidates will be given 5 days to join the graduate engineering courses.

1.52 Lakh seats:

430 engineering colleges are participating in the admission for graduate engineering courses in the current academic year! There are 157,378 seats available. Out of this, as per the 7.5% quota allotted for students from government schools, 11,804 seats are available. Under this 7.5% quota for government school students, the number of seats has increased in this current academic year by 235 seats.

In industrial education, there are 3,143 seats. This is higher by 61 seats compared to last year.

We have planned to fill the vacant seats arising from students who leave after being selected in the counseling for the graduate medical courses!

Action has been initiated to fill up the seats in case the candidates who got selected in private engineering colleges apply again."

The Minister for Higher Education of the State Government of Tamil Nadu, Ponmudi, informed that emphasis has been made to the respective colleges to refund the fees paid in full in case students of an engineering college want to switch to a different engineering college.

Timetable for counseling:

  • First Round: 28th July - 9th August
  • Second Round: 9th August - 22nd August
  • Third Round: 22nd August - 3rd September
