For setting up of substations in Chennai, not enough space is available now. As a result, the Electricity Board is now having plans to set up compact substations in a small space present.
It is well known that electricity is being supplied from 33/11 KV substations to low voltage sections including shops, houses etc in TN. An area of 4300 sq ft would be required to set up a substation. Outside this substation, a control room and 2 transformers would have to be installed. By this, 15 MW of electricity would be handled.
In important cities like Chennai etc not enough space is available now for setting up of substations. The demand for electricity has been increasing every day in cities like Chennai etc is a known fact.
To overcome this issue of the availability of enough space, in the future, substations that could fit perfectly in small areas or `compact` would be set up. Information is that just 2400 sq ft would be sufficient to set up compact substations. It must be noted that instead of a control room an indoor control room would be used to operate the transformer.
Electricity would be transmitted through the power lines. With the help of a telecommunication facility, the box would be connected to the control room. It would be operated without manpower electronically. Incase of any fault, an alarm sound would be given and from the control room itself the issue could be fixed. From this compact substation, the electricity would go through 4 channels
