Chennai Mayor R Priya has announced that the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to undertake a major renovation project in Saidapet, estimated at Rs 25 crore. The project aims to revitalize the oldest vegetable market in the area, which is currently in a dilapidated condition and posing inconveniences to residents. The new market, upon completion, will accommodate a total of 161 shops, providing improved facilities for both vegetable vendors and retailers.

The proposal for the renovation has been a long-standing demand from the public, who have complained about the market`s poor condition and the challenges they face, particularly during the monsoon season due to water stagnation. The project`s preliminary works have already been completed through a private consultancy, indicating progress in the planning phase.

Addressing concerns raised by Ward 142 Councillor M Krishnamurthy, Mayor Priya assured that the reconstruction work would incorporate modern facilities and amenities for the vendors. However, the commencement of the actual renovation is pending permission from the state government.

In addition to the Saidapet vegetable market, the GCC is also working on enhancing facilities for local fishermen. The construction of modern fish markets in Chintadripet and Loop Road, Pattinapakkam, is underway, with a total allocation of Rs 2.19 crore and Rs 10 crore, respectively. These modern fish markets will feature sewage treatment plants to prevent fish odour, robust roofs designed to withstand monsoon winds, and efficient garbage disposal and effluent plants for bio-digestion of fish waste.
