The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) achieved a significant milestone in its underground rail construction project for corridor 4 with the successful completion of the factory acceptance test for its second Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Manufactured by the renowned German company Herrenknecht, the TBM named S1075B weighs an impressive 700 tonnes and boasts a bore diameter of 6.670 meters, equipped with a 110-meter earth pressure balance machine.
The factory acceptance test took place in Tiruvallur and witnessed the presence of CMRL officials and consultants from Herrenknecht. With the test successfully concluded, the TBM will now be dismantled, carefully packed, and transported to its designated location at the Panagal Park station in T Nagar.
Preparations for the TBM launching shaft are currently underway at Panagal Park station and are expected to be completed by October. The assembly and lowering of the TBM are planned to commence soon after. The ambitious machine will tunnel at a maximum depth of 26 meters below ground, starting its excavation journey from Boat Club, passing through Nandanam, Panagal Park, and Kodambakkam, ultimately reaching the retrieval shaft after Kodambakkam flyover by September 2024.
