The doctors now are witnessing more patients with chronic pain year after year at the TNGMSSH or Tamil Nadu Govt Multi Super Speciality Hospital in Chennai. It is well known that this TNGMSSH is among the very few facilities in the government sector in the state of TN. The doctors were of the opinion that more awareness regarding pain management could lead the patients to lead a better quality of life.
History about this pain relieving clinic:
It was in the year 2017 pain relieving clinic was started and it has treated more than 4800 out patients. In addition, as many as 752 procedures were performed on the patients.
According to Dr. Ashok Kumar, head of dept, Pain Medicine, TNGMSSH, the pain clinic caters to 2 types of pain namely cancer and non-cancer pain. He threw light on how the majority of patients, about 60%, were diagnosed with cancer. He concluded that pain management would aid in better compliance of drugs and would improve the quality of the lives.
The shocking piece of information is that there has been a lack of awareness about the pain medicine among the doctors also. As a result of low awareness, the doctors send the patients for pain relief in the last stage only after exhausting all the treatments. Truth is that beginning the pain management early would be highly beneficial for the patients.
Various non-cancer based pain includes lower back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, heel pain, severe headaches, knee joint pain etc.
