Tangedco Revolutionizes Meter Reading with Automated System Trial

Tangedco, the Tamil Nadu power utility, is piloting an automated meter reading system in 440 electricity distribution circles. The novel approach involves downloading energy consumption data directly from meters, bypassing manual readings by assessors. This innovation aims to rectify accuracy issues faced by residential consumers. The software-driven process, overseen by field assessors and local engineering staff, eliminates manual intervention and enhances transparency.
This endeavor could also pave the way for the impending launch of smart meters, funded by the central government and scheduled for the following year. These smart meters will leverage the same technology, allowing users to access their energy consumption data conveniently.
Initially targeting high-load consumers with current transformer (CT) service connections, the success of this trial could lead to its statewide expansion. This modernization aligns with Tangedco`s commitment to improving consumer experience and optimizing utility operations.
