The construction of a new suburban bus stand at Kilambakkam, adjacent to Vandalur, began in February 2019 with the aim of alleviating traffic congestion in Chennai city. This new bus station, spanning about 88 acres and costing Rs. 400 crores, is now 99 percent complete and is set to open in the coming days.
The Kilambakkam bus stand will serve as the departure point for buses heading to southern states. Since Kilambakkam is situated between the Vandalur and Guduvanchery Suburban Railway Stations, those traveling from urban areas will largely rely on road transport, potentially causing increased traffic on the GST road.
Given this scenario, there has been a demand for the establishment of a suburban railway station at Kilambakkam. The Tamil Nadu government has announced its intention to cover the entire cost of setting up this railway station near the Kilambakkam bus stand. For the initial phase of construction, the state government has already allocated Rs. 40 lakhs to the railway administration. Once the contract is finalized, the construction work is expected to be completed within a year. The introduction of the railway station at Kilambakkam is anticipated to significantly mitigate traffic congestion on the GST road.
