The shortage in the onion supplies from the neighbouring states have now made the prices of onions shoot up in the Chennai wholesale market. The onion is now sold at Rs 40 per kg from the previous Rs 25 per kg.

It was brought out by some traders that the prices of onions would go up to Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg in the coming days. The crops were damaged due to intense rains is known. Now, the prices of tomatoes have come down to Rs 50 per kg in the wholesale markets. The retail markets sell tomatoes for Rs 70 per kg.

Earlier, the traders and farmers have mentioned that the onion prices might not surge and that was based on storage and harvesting of onions. There has been heavy rains in Nashik, Ballari, Telangana etc and due to the rains onion crops were damaged badly. This has led to disruption in the onion supply to TN. The onion storage and harvesting were badly hit as many places in north India like Haryana, Punjab, UP etc received intense rains.

Now, it is revealed that the prices of onions might go up to Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg at the wholesale market. This was according to Mr. P. Sukumaran, secretary of Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants Association. He added that if the rains continue in the SW monsoon season then the rates of onions would increase drastically.

It must be remembered that in 2019 in the NE monsoon season the prices of onions went up to Rs 150 per kg due to the shortage in the supply. As there was an adequate supply of onions in the last 3 years, the prices of onions did not rise abnormally. Some retail vendors have pointed out that in Chennai onion prices might go to Rs 90 per kg also.
